Dollar Tree Wire Pumpkin

‘Tis the season for Dollar Tree wire pumpkins, and we all love those! Turn that wire pumpkin into a stand-alone pumpkin and utilize your craft scraps with this simple craft project.

I saw the inspiration for this pumpkin at Rhonda’s house. You can see it by her front door. Hers is a nice, sturdy metal, and although I adore it, I haven’t been willing to spend the money to buy one just like it. I’m very thrifty. Selectively. Therefore, I saw this wire pumpkin at Dollar Tree and saw the possibility of a smaller version. It was a quick and easy craft and another way to utilize those Dollar Tree wire pumpkins we all love.

Additionally, I wasn’t sure if I was going to downsize mine when we moved because of the military move weight limit, but it happened to weigh nothing and turned out so cute that I had to keep it.

The cost was $3 plus black spray paint. I think I used 2 rolls of ribbon. Dollar Tree wire ribbon rolls aren’t long. In today’s new prices, it would be $3.75 plus paint. I’d scored $1.00 Walmart spray paint that no longer exists. I do miss that. The price increase at Dollar Tree didn’t surprise me; it was a long time a coming. The el-cheapo spray paint is now $2.50. Yes, I searched in disbelief for the really cheap stuff. (spoken like a true cheapskate. lol!) The less I pay for craft supplies, the more crafting I can do. This paint is available only in black or white, but it’s great for crafting as long as you’re fine with gloss which is A-OK for this craft. Supplies

  • Wire Pumpkin from Dollar Tree
  • Wire Ribbon from Dollar Tree (optional 2 spools for larger bow)
  • Orange Tulle Scrap or Tulle Ribbon
  • Black Spray Paint (optional)

First, I started bending the pumpkin so that it could stand upright.

I bent slowly and gently on each side equally.

And bent . . .

And bent until it was rounded.

I spray painted it black, then I waited to paint it to prevent the paint from getting scratched during the bending process. (optional)

The wire pumpkins are dark green, so you can leave it unpainted if that works for your Fall color scheme. Spray paint dries fast, so you can throw this together while visiting with a friend or watching TV. I bent and sprayed mine, cooked supper, after which I trimmed it.

Finishing Touches

Stem

  • Brown Paper Bag
  • Hot Glue

Covering the stem is very non-technical. I used a strip of brown paper bag that I didn’t bother to measure, but if you want a guideline, I’d start with 12″x 6″ or larger, because it’s always easier to cut it down. Loop this under the bottom of the step and fold it in half so you have both sides of the stem covered. Scrunch and twist the paper. Arange it to cover the wire stem and secure it with glue. Keep twisting the excess paper and curl it. Cut extra length off.

Bow

Make a bow with wire lined ribbon. Use 2 Dollar Tree rolls to get the size bow shown.

Cut a piece of tulle larger than your bow. Gather in middle and secure with hot glue. Fan out on each side to make a circle. Alternatively, use 2 or more pieces of tulle ribbon, fold in fans, and glue together.

Display

You can put a flameless candle in the middle of your wire pumpkin or it can stand alone. I have it shown with a Halloween tree that could easily be made from other colors of glitter willow branches to give it a Fall rather than Halloween look.
